Bacchanalian

Online Etymology Dictionary entry for Bacchanal
1536, from L. bacchanalis "having to do with Bacchus" (Gk. Bakkhos), god of wine and revelry. His name is perhaps related to L. bacca "berry." Meaning "riotous, drunken roistering; orgy" is from 1711; Bacchanalia in this sense is from 1633, from the name of the Roman festival held in honor of Bacchus. Bacchae "female attendants of Bacchus" is from Gk. Bakkhai, pl. of Bakkhe.

Something from the last days of Gen X (remember them?) popular culture,
with the kind of glossy musical sneer that was typical at the time. Lyrics here.

Features Maxim a.k.a. the Black guy in Prodigy and Skin a.k.a. the Black chick in Skunk Anansie.

She's kinda overworking her lip synching and is obviously self-seduced by those
single white false eyelashes. But c'mon.. this was the time of Marilyn Manson's Mechanical Animals.

For reference, this was a year before Jill Scott's "A Long Walk" and India Irie's "Video".

Yay for Black folk getting their rockstar on :)

What does the phrase "ein matzav" mean? Literally I know it means "there's no situation," but it seems like it's a colloquial phrase that means more than the literal meaning.

'Cowboy Bebop' Live Action Film

  • Jul. 24th, 2008 at 4:53 PM

Spike is putting out his cigs and rallying up his intergalactic group to hit the big screen. In an interview with IF Magazine, producer Erwin Stoff is working with Fox to make a live-action feature film of the anime favorite, Cowboy Bebop.

"I'm really excited to be working on it," said Stoff, who also produced A Scanner Darkly, starring Keanu Reeves and Robert Downey Jr. Originally released in Japan on 1998, Cowboy Bebop revolves around the story of Spike and his crew of bounty hunters (Cowboys) as they go around galaxies searching for the next loot. An animated feature film, Cowboy Bebop The Movie, was released in the U.S. in 2002.

Space cowboys, hot chicks and guns - count us all in.

First, I am pro-choice, but I must say that abortions for sex selection scare the b-jesus out of me. Why? They are almost invariably, aborting female fetuses. I like women, yes, contrary to the pejorative idiocy of some who will forever after be called, the people who can't read, I actually like women, support their ascension to places of power and their right to fulfill their dreams - like any other human being on this planet. Which is, what we all are, when all is said and done, human beings. I also would prefer to live in a planet that had plenty of women around, certainly not a planet or country with too many males roaming around. This is not a danger in North America, but in many other countries, it is. In China, the social engineering of the Communist regime that called for "one child" led to mass abortions of females, and in other societies, where males are preferred, for reasons of prestige or finance or both, this is also escalating.

Here, an interesting take on this by Mark Steyn, the Canadian who wrote the book Canada nearly banned, America Alone

Smaller families may mean just a boy or a girl for liberal Democrats, but in other societies it means just a boy. The Indian writer Gita Aravamudan calls this the “female feticide.” Colleen Carroll Campbell writes that abortion, “touted as the key to liberating future generations of women,” has become instead “the preferred means of eradicating them”. And, while it won’t eradicate all of them, Philip Longman, a demographer of impeccably liberal credentials, put the future in a nutshell in the title of his essay: “The Return Of Patriarchy.”

NOTE: I originally put the wrong entry in my tag, but I just corrected that. Sorry if you saw the wrong post originally in my link. It is fixed.

Meet my kid "Sex Fruit"?

  • Jul. 24th, 2008 at 4:32 PM
I am not so sure that what a few weird ass parents choose to call their kid is anyone's business but their own, but some parents in New Zealand do call their kids some weird ass shit. Take for example, "Sex Fruit". Ah, OK... I guess it is ah, accurate. Still... can you imagine telling other kids your name is "Sex Fruit"!

Certainly, calling your kid "Fish and Chips" (some actually did) might be handicapping that kid on the playground and elsewhere.

A judge there recently ordered some parents to change their child's name, or else!

Here:

In his ruling, Murfitt cited a list of the unfortunate names.

Registration officials blocked some names, including Fish and Chips, Yeah Detroit, Keenan Got Lucy and Sex Fruit, he said. But others were allowed, including Number 16 Bus Shelter "and tragically, Violence," he said.

No Halo Announcement At Comic-Con

  • Jul. 24th, 2008 at 3:54 PM

After the non-announcement of a new Bungie Halo game at E3 08, many thought the announcement would come at this year's Comic-Con. Sorry, Charlie: No new Halo was announced at the ComicCon Halo round-table.

Although lots of fan questions were answered, no bombshells were revealed, save the fact that we will not see Master Chief's face in a game anytime soon. "Look in the mirror, and that's Master Chief's face," we were told.

Michael Bay will once again take the director's seat while Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox will reprise their roles.
